Reforge Charleston

June 13 – 17, 2022

This is a one-week summer course for children ages 10 – 15yo.

Students will learn to design, engineer, fabricate, paint and decorate their own entries.

Day 1: Introduction to Woodshop

Students will be taught the names, purpose of and the proper use of all the tools we have here at Reforge. Not all children will be given the chance to operate all tools, but they will be given a thorough demonstration with each. Older and more responsible students will use the band saw and various sanding machines to create the shape of their car themselves on day 3.

Day 2: The science behind Pinewood Derby

Dr. John Curro will lead the students in a lesson on potential energy, friction, alignment and the importance of placement of weight on the car. Students will pencil their designs on their stock block, included in the Pinewood Derby car kit provided with tuition.

Day 3: While students will be reviewing what they’ve learned so far, each will be called upon to cut the blank derby car block. Not all students will be allowed to operate this machine but, everyone will be intimately involved in this process. Once everyone has a car cut, we will work together to prep and prime them.

Day 4: Painting and stickers

The day begins with a base coat of spray paint. The goal is to have all the painting finished in one day. While waiting for paint to dry students will learn to operate a vinyl cutting machine where they can easily design and create stickers for their awesome car.

Day 5: Wheels & axles

Students will implement the lessons learned on day two. Preparing and installing the wheels and axles, applying stickers and weights and lubricating everything that moves.
