Originally from Sapporo, Japan, Tomoko Cummings is the owner and artist behind denim upcycling brand, American Butt Clothing. A self-taught designer, she started American Butt Clothing at a booth at the Brooklyn Flea Market. Over time, she learned that upcycling denim fulfilled another passion of hers: sustainability. By sourcing materials secondhand, Tomoko is doing her part to lessen fashion’s impact on the environment.

EXTEND THE LIFE OF YOUR DENIM

Did you know the denim production process has a big impact on the environment? By following these tips, you can make your denim last longer and increase the sustainability of your next denim purchase!

  • Wash less. You don’t need to wash your jeans every time you wear them—really! This will add YEARS to your denim.
  • Wash inside-out in cold water. This will help preserve the dyes and finishing techniques you love about your favorite pair.
  • Avoid the dryer. The heat can break down denim fibers faster. Instead, let your jeans air dry after washing.
  • Repair before you replace! Bring your well-worn blues to a tailor or follow some of our upcycling hacks from American Butt Clothing before you toss them aside.
  • Recycle! By turning in your denim at Citadel Mall this season, we can extend the life of discarded denim.
